Great finish to the 1st semester for Saints Women

Wednesday 27 November 2019

All 3 Women’s teams finished on a high last Wednesday with 3 wins from 3.

The 1st team of Beth Laybourne, Birgit Burk, Matilde Piras & Simone Jensen made it 4 wins out of 7 in the Premier League with a 8-4 win over Durham 2nd. This is the best season so far in their third Premier league campaign. Needing the final singles rubber to clinch the win, Beth battled through to take  it 10-5 in the deciding tiebreak. The first Premier league victory on the road for the Saints Women. This puts them in third place with 3 matches to play after the winter break.

The 2nd team had a 12-0 victory over Stirling 3rd with the 4 players, Sandy Martinovic, Abby Schleichkorn, Megan Pollick & Sidney Bode winning all their matches. This leaves them 3rd equal in Scottish Div 1 and within touching distance of 2nd place with 4 matches remaining.

To make it a clean sweep for the Women’s teams, Lily Saab, Penelope Owen, Olivia Mooney & Eilidh Baird had an emphatic 12-0 win over Strathclyde 2nd. The 3rds are now only 3 points behind top placed team, Edinburgh 1st who they still have to play.

Plenty of great performances from all involved with a healthy mix of new and returning students. Looking forward to next semester’s matches.
