All 5 Men’s teams in action on last match day of semester

Wednesday 27 November 2019

It was a busy end to the semester for Saints tennis with all 5 men’s teams in BUCS action.

The 1st team traveled to Stirling 3rd in a top of the table clash. Ed Pomeroy completed an unbeaten first half of the season in singles with an impressive 2 set victory over Matthew Earnshaw. Ken Senkoff made a good fight of it in the second set against Angus Osborne but just fell short of making a full comeback. Sam Stead did similarly in his match at no 3 where he lost out to James Blair. At no 4, Fin Pearson put on a very impressive display against Josh Freeman and took the 1st set. The 2nd set went the way of Stirling to take the match into a match tiebreak. After some great tennis from both players Freeman came out on top with a 10-8 victory. Saints needed both doubles if they were to get a draw and stay level at the top of the table. However, it wasn’t to be as it was one doubles each. Ed & Fin won their no 1 rubber and ken & Sam lost out in their match. Still all to play for in semester 2, so hopefully the team can still battle for the top spot.

The 2nd team played Abertay 1st and their team of Finlay Brown, Joe Kelly, Gunnar Thorstensen & Ali Greig had a 12-0 win against the Dundee team. The 2nds are now sitting 3rd in Div 3 and only 3 points behind leaders RGU 1st with three fixtures remaining.

The 3rds were up against Aberdeen 3rd and finished with a 12-0 victory with wins from Sean Vale, Mark Brocklebank, Gregory Dritschel & Ross Witney-Hunter. The 3rd team are now sitting mid table of Div 4 in a very tight league. With 3 matches left, there are still chances to move up the table.

The 4ths travelled to Dundee to play their 2nd team and finished with a 3-3 draw. The team was Wilson Mosier, Alex Schellekens, Oscar Pringle & Gabriel Spira. Freshers Oscar & Gabriel took their singles and doubles matches.

The 5th team had a tough but good match in Aberdeen v RGU 2nd with 2 players, Orion Portelli & Fraser Gibson making their debuts. Ali Notley & Antoni were the other two players in the 5ths and it was Orion & Fraser who picked up the only win of the day in their doubles. The team went down 1-5 but put up a good showing against second placed RGU 2nd.
